Hackers Take the Person Out of Personal
Angry Internet users are suing a Redwood-City-based game developer, accusing the company of grossly neglecting to protect personal information of nearly 32 million users.
Apparently, RockYou, which claims to be one of the "fastest growing tech companies," failed to encrypt the emails and passwords, making it available to the dumbest hacker out there.
One of the plaintiffs says he gave the company his email address, and later saw that it had been "compromised" in an e-mail. He claims the company knew that the database for storing this personal information was broken.
According to the online security firm, Imperva had alerted the company that hackers were openly discussing RockYou's vulnerabilities.
But it was too late. Hackers had already penetrated the company's database.
RockYou officials told SF Weekly that the company takes its users' privacy seriously.
At least they do now.
