Muni: Service Cuts Won't Affect Giants Fans

Maybe this plan won't fail after all...
Welcome to crowded Monday. You are currently enjoying the first working day following Muni's hefty service cuts. Just remember -- more folks crammed onto buses and trains means more chances of meeting your future spouse on public transit. That's our positive thinking for the day.

The changes to Muni's bus lines are fairly drastic; by the time you finish reading them, the bus may even have shown up. But the alterations to the rail lines are minimal -- on weekends, the N-Judah will go no further inbound than Embarcadero. Fair enough -- but what about during baseball season? We phoned Muni spokesman Judson True and asked him what gives.

True told us that, yes, this is how things are going to be, even come April when baseball crowds begin flocking to AT&T Park. But before we could ponder the possibilities of hordes of incensed Giants fans packing the T-line or hopping the 30 or 47, True burst our bubble.

He assured us that some manner of ballpark special rail lines would be pressed into service for weekend games. If they're simply the Embarcadero shuttles that travel between the park and the station then, yes, you'll be cooling your heels at Embarcadero while waiting for an outbound Muni line. But, hey, it's a recession. It could be worse and almost always is.

When asked if this year's level of ballpark Muni service will be available for weekend Giants games in 2010, True told us it would.

So, play ball.
