Back in April, SF Weekly reported that San Francisco Animal Care and Control was suffering from "Paris Hilton Syndrome" -- a cavalcade of ankle-biter dogs were languishing in the shelter. It appears the syndrome has advance to a pandemic -- Animal Control will hold a press conference today urging San Franciscans to save a tiny dog or two.

Currently, one-third of all the dogs at the Animal Control are Chihuahuas or Chihuahua mixes -- up from 20 percent in April. Meanwhile, of the 66 dogs currently being housed by Grateful Dogs Rescue, 31 are Chihuahuas. Clearly this city has a Chihuahua problem.

While the number of owner-surrendered animals has jumped this year, Chihuahuas are disproportionately represented. Back around Easter, Animal Control staff blamed abandonment of trendy purse dogs on people swayed by cute little doggies on TV and the movies -- and too damn thick to get those purse dogs fixed.

If you've ever had any interest in adopting an animal, please visit here and give it a thought.
