Sacto Mayor, Former Cal and NBA Star Kevin Johnson, Blogs That He Was Robbed in San Francisco

​In his illustrious National Basketball Association career, Kevin Johnson racked up 1,082 steals. Now a San Francisco miscreant has registered a steal at Johnson's expense.

In his blog, Johnson, now mayor of Sacramento, wrote that his weekend trip to San Francisco was highlighted by someone swiping his suit bag -- while Johnson assisted a struggling elderly pedestrian.

"I didn't expect to be a crime victim on the streets of San Francisco. Nobody does. But it happened, on a beautiful evening this past weekend near Union Square. As crimes go, it could have been much worse. I was helping an elderly man when somebody sneaked up behind me and stole my garment bag. I lost a nice suit, a nice pair of shoes and overnight toiletries. Not the end of the world, but frustrating," wrote Johnson. "The real crime was the vulnerability of it all, the idea that I could leave my bag on a crowded street, turn my back for 30 seconds and have my stuff stolen."

According to Johnson, he took Amtrak from the Capital to Richmond, then transferred to BART. He began chatting with the elderly man on the BART train, and walked with him out of Powell station.

​Laden down with bags, the elderly man told Johnson "I can't make it." Johnson wrote that he placed his own bag on the ground, loaded the old man's luggage into a taxi, and even handed $20 to the driver. When the Sacramento mayor turned around, someone had filched his bag.

"Angry now, I ran up and down the street. A woman asked if I was OK. Nobody saw anything. My bag vanished into the crowd," wrote Johnson. "There are lessons here. Pay attention. Don't let anything out of sight. Always be on guard. It's a shame we have to live that way."

No, San Francisco of late has not been a city that is kind to its tourists.

Johnson concluded the letter with what might be interpreted as a shot at a man who hopes to move out of San Francisco and into Johnson's neighborhood.

"Next time I see San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, I'll tell him the story and give him my word that nothing like that will happen to him in Sacramento. And I'll hope I can make good on the promise."
