Several San Francisco Chronicle sources told us they were anticipating a "small" round of about 10 or so layoffs to hit the paper's newsroom, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

One of those on the way out will be veteran Chron editor Ken Conner. He told SF Weekly that he'd agreed to take a buyout and will leave the paper on Sept. 30.

Prior to his current post as assistant managing editor for news, Conner was a city editor and Sunday editor. He has worked for the Chron for 23 years.

Conner, for his part, said he'd heard "a fairly small" number of his newsroom colleagues will be leaving along with him. And, yes, at this point, 10 employees counts as "fairly small" in Chronicle layoff-speak.
