A Murder Most Foul: John Montgomery's Stabbing Death in Tenderloin Hotel Is City's 34th Homicide
This has not been a good stretch for residents of Tenderloin hotels -- who never lead the easiest of lives. SF Weekly has written a bit about how an "ongoing dispute" between two tenants at the Rose Hotel led 50-year-old William Pious to walk into the room of his sleeping neighbor and douse the man in boiling cooking oil.
That's more bizarre and eye-catching than the events half a mile down the road at the Vincent Hotel at 459 Turk Street -- but, to this point, less fatal. A man was stabbed to death yesterday afternoon at the Vincent and a suspect is in custody. The Medical Examiner this morning told SF Weekly that the victim is 37-year-old San Franciscan John Montgomery.
Montgomery is the city's 34th homicide of the year -- that total was bumped up as earlier this week when the death of 63-year-old Helen Canafax was ruled a homicide.
The woman, known throughout SoMa for her kindliness to the homeless, had her hip broken when mugged from behind in April. The Potrero Hill resident died of a pulmonary embolism weeks later; authorities believe that fatal blood clot wouldn't have occurred if she hadn't been gravely wounded during the purse-snatching.
