Steve Mahoney, the San Francisco Department of Public Works steam-cleaner who will lead the 49ers out onto the field on his red-and-gold, Niners-themed Hog, will be revving it up at a home-opening celebration at 8 a.m. on Sunday at Caffe Trieste in North Beach. Fliers advertising the event, he noted, were quick to drop the word "official" from the phrase "official 49ers Harleyman" -- as such a designation apparently implies the National Football League has passed judgment on the matter. Evidently, it has not.
Following the caffeinated get-together, Mahoney will be motoring his bike to Candlestick Park (his preferred route is to head down the Embarcadero and eventually turn left at Third Street). If a pack forms, he's happy to be the leader of it.
As for his on-field routine, Mahoney said he's thrilled to do whatever the 49ers ask of him. He'll be leading the team out onto the field -- but, beyond that, he's not sure exactly what 49ers officials have in mind for him.
Will he be heading through pyrotechnics or steam? Will he crashing through a 49ers sign? He doesn't know. The team has made him a special jersey -- but he's unaware what name or number he will wear.
Will he have a cheerleader on the back of his bike? This idea did come up -- and Mahoney, who is single, did not object -- but, again, there are no "official" plans for the unofficial team Harleyman.
"Oh, I can't wait," he said of Sunday. "I just can't wait."
