Union: Chronicle Still Mum On How Many Layoffs Coming, Who Will Go

Media Workers Guild rep Carl T. Hall said that a meeting with San Francisco Chronicle management just let out without the burning questions being answered: How many layoffs should employees expect and who's going to go?

"The only news is that losses are still on the order of $1 million a week and clearly that's what's driving this," said Hall, a longtime former science writer at the paper who earlier this year took management's buyout offer.

While rumors at the paper tended to focus on what departments may or may not get run through the ringer, Hall said no one should breath easily.

"They are looking at all areas," says Hall. "I wouldn't put the newsroom in any protected category."

Hall hoped for more clarity by next week.
