It's Official: Chris Daly Retains His San Franciscan Privileges

Chris Daly -- an official San Franciscan
The city attorney's office just announced that Supervisor Chris Daly is, in fact, still a resident of District 6 in San Francisco -- despite the fact that he and his wife are now the proud owners of two houses in Fairfield (where his wife and kids now reside).

A 15-page memo explaining the decision states that the city attorney's investigation consisted of scouring Daly's 2008 tax returns, driver's license, car insurance, recent statements from his four (!) bank accounts, and bills covering the past year. They also interviewed Daly, his neighbors, and apparently checked out his bedroom at the condo on Stevenson Street which the Dalys have owned since 2001. "Based on our inspection of his bedroom and other rooms in the unit, it appears that Supervisor Daly resides at least part-time at Stevenson Street," reads the memo.

As Daly had to prove he had truly been residing at the condo according to government code, SF Weekly bets it was the bedroom check that finally won over the inspectors -- not the myriad checks of his financial and other documents. But what, pray tell, did they possibly find in his bedroom that might have indicated his ongoing residence at the condo? A worn copy of Investing for Dummies? Solar-powered sex toys? A toy California license plate that says "CHRIS"?

One more morsel for thought: Unlike the last supervisor investigated for potentially living somewhere other than San Francisco, former Republican Ed Jew, Chris Daly is not a political naif but a longtime supervisor and member of the influential Democratic County Central Committee (which, among other tasks, makes the city's official Democratic political endorsements). He's also not under investigation by the Feds for extortion -- and has never copped to any childhood brain injuries that affect his judgment as an adult.
