Green Onions: Now With the Delicious Taste of Salmonella?

I was going to open this blog post with a mildly funny line about how onions make you cry -- but these might make you puke. Unfortunately, the onions in question are green, which are not the kind that make you cry. Unless you're especially moved by the singular beauty of green onions. Anyway. A warning issued this morning by NewStar Fresh Foods reports that the company shipped 772 cartons of iced jumbo green onions that may be infected with Salmonella. Fifty-eight of those cartons headed to Detroit (which needed more problems, right?) and San Francisco (ditto). The potentially funky onions were shipped to La Loma Produce, Good Life Grocery, and El Grande in San Francisco between the dates of July 20th and July 21st, which means that even if they weren't covered in illness, they are probably not delicious anymore. But consumers who are not prone to cleaning out their fridge are advised to chuck any green onions purchased from the aforementioned stores during the questionable period.

The company states that any products that were shipped directly "within the foodservice channel" have already been recovered and destroyed. How does one destroy green onions? Shredding? Burning? Burying? Pulping? Lethal injection?

NewStar also recalled some cilantro shipped to Michigan last year, which was also suspected of carrying Salmonella. That recall turned out to be a false alarm.

Calls to NewStar have not yet been returned.
