Campaign for California Families Motions to Butt Into Prop. 8 Lawsuit

Just in time for pride weekend, the good ol' nemesis of California gay folk, Campaign for California Families, is trying to butt into the latest lawsuit against Proposition 8.
In order to give you an idea of the company the organization keeps, the campaign is represented by Liberty Counsel, a non-profit based in perhaps appropriately named Lynchburg, Virginia. On their Web site, you can sign up for your very own "Right Extremist ID Card." Liberty Counsel has represented the campaign in multiple legal challenges of gay marriage to date.
Basically, the motion states that it's not enough that same-sex couples are suing Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other California elected officials in federal court. Campaign for California Families wants to be sued, too, as a stakeholder in this fight because "if Plaintiffs are successful in their lawsuit, then the definition of marriage, as it has existed for thousands of years, will be declared unconstitutional," according to the court filing. "That would significantly and adversely affect California families and would effectively eradicate the voters' right to amend the California Constitution by initiative." In other words: "Sue us, too! Sue my wife -- please! I'm Sparticus! ... So sue me!"
The lawsuit brought about by the same-sex couples argues that the state constitutional amendment against gay marriage violates the 14th Amendment. But Mathew Staver, Founder of Liberty Counsel and Dean of Liberty University School of Law, says that's just crazy talk: "The United States Supreme Court has previously hinted that the U.S. Constitution does not grant a right for same-sex couples to marry," he wrote in a press release. "Common sense and a quick read of the Constitution say there is no such right to same-sex marriage."
