San Francisco Snuggie Pub Crawl This Friday

SF Weekly editorial assistant Andy Wright and staff writer Ashley Harrell know a lame trend when they see one.

As predicted on this blog back in January, the Snuggie -- an astoundingly unnecessary blanket with sleeves -- has become all the ironic rage. Millions of people have purchased the shitty, sleeved blankets in red, blue, and green, and dozens of media outlets have taken their chance to appear hip and whimsical by donning the Snuggie.

The cast and crews of Good Morning America and The Today Show did it. Bill Maher wore one on his show, Real Time, while simultaneously worrying that the rapid spread of the Snuggie has Americans "in danger of becoming a silly people." Eventually, somebody posted a top-notch parody, "What the Fuck Blanket" on YouTube, and finally, the New York Times caught on and sent a reporter out in a Snuggie, effectively ending the trend.

Although declared March 10 "National Burn a Snuggie Day," some Snuggie enthusiasts still choose to live in the past, refusing to accept that Snuggies have jumped the shark. You can hang out with these losers (and me) on Friday night, starting at 8 p.m., at San Francisco's first Snuggie Pub Crawl. It starts at the Rouge Nightclub, according to a Yelp listing, and continuing to Nick's Crispy Tacos, Shanghai Kelly's, Vertigo, McTeagues, and R Bar.

The crawl is BYO snuggie, obviously, and there will be contests for decoration in the categories of: best male, best female, best couple or group, and best sluttiest snuggie. Be warned, say the organizers, "if you got a slanket, f*ck off. You kind is not welcome here."
