Gavin's Political Coat Tails are Notoriously Short -- But Will His Plug Work Wonders for L'Oreal?

GavinNewsom.jpg
We don't know what's in Gavin's head -- but now we know what's on it
Gavin Newsom is young, handsome, successful, and, most of all, people like him. San Franciscans love the guy. Elected him mayor twice, we hear. That being said, with rare exceptions, we tend not to take his advice -- especially when it comes to who (or what) we should vote for. Bluntly, the man can't get San Franciscans to vote for his pals. Remember Rob Black? Doug Chan? Hillary Clinton? Okay, maybe the last one, but you get the drift (San Franciscans, by the way, voted for Barack Obama over Clinton, 52.5 percent to 44.1 percent, despite Newsom's fervent support of the New York Senator).

San Franciscans' affection for Gavin -- yet apparent disdain for his ideals -- is one of many conundrums surrounding the mayor. So, with a minor buzz being generated by Newsom's revalation of his hair goop of choice to Ryan Seacrest -- "L'Oreal ... And it's the Clean Gel. It's the Total Control Clean Gel, because they've got seven or eight products, and the other ones don't work" -- it will be interesting to see how San Franciscans respond.

In short, if we don't trust Gavin when he says "Vote for Rob Black/Doug Chan/Hillary/Etc." will we follow his advice when he pitches L'Oreal?

SF Weekly stays up at night pondering about things like this. Here's the deal. We'll give Gavin's advice time to sink in. Then we'll hit up a bevy of San Francisco purveyors of hair goop and see if L'Oreal Total Control Clean Gel is flying off the shelves or keeping Doug Chan company.

Stay tuned.
