Coach Is Who We Think He Is! San Francisco Squad in New Pro Football League Taps Dennis Green as Coach. Is Michael Vick Next?

Categories: Sports

Dennis Green, who built up a stellar career as a San Francisco 49ers assistant coach, then the head man at Stanford and with the Minnesota Vikings -- only to have much of his reputation obscured when he delivered the most unintentionally hilarious postgame football rant in modern times (above) -- has been named head coach of the city's yet to be named franchise in the nascent United Football League.

The four-team, six-city league (no joke) -- which kicks off in October -- is the brainchild of San Francisco investment banker Bill Hambrecht, and one of the lead investors is Paul Pelosi. Yes, that Paul Pelosi.Tad Taube, who owned the Oakland Invaders of the USFL along with Hambrecht in the early 1980s, told SF Weekly in January that he thinks the upstart league has a shot.

With fellow coaches like former New York Giants head man Jim Fassel, onetime New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett, and longtime NFL defensive guru Ted Cottrell, it isn't exactly hiring folks off the unemployment line. And slinging the ball for one of those teams -- wait, is that Michael Vick's music?

If Vick avoids his destiny (the Las Vegas franchise) and ends up playing his home contests at AT&T Park, let the debate commence on which San Francisco team has the best quarterback.
