Gavin's Catholic Bashing
By Lauren Smiley
Here's the statement of Catholic League president Bill Donahue:
"Part of the blame for the latest attack goes to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Both Newsom and the Board have shown nothing but contempt for the First Amendment rights of Catholics. When crucifixes are sold as sex toys and Catholic sensibilities are assaulted by naked men in the street at the annual Folsom Street Fair, they say nothing. When gay men dressed as nuns show up at Mass--at the same church--they say nothing."
The statement included Newsom's city e-mail address, and asked Catholics nationwide to contact him.
But he said his faith still influences him in an interview with the student newspaper of his Catholic alma mater, Santa Clara University. Newsom called himself an "Irish-Catholic rebel...that still has tremendous admiration for the Church and very strong faith." Hell, he even kicks it Old-Testament style with his proclamations from time to time, intoning that gay marriage is coming "whether you like it or not" to his cheering followers like a declaration from Mt. Sinai.
Here's his latest pronouncement on this whole graffiti thing from his Web site: "We strongly condemn the vandalism of the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. It was a cowardly and criminal act. San Francisco is a city that embraces people of all faiths. To intimidate a community and threaten a place of worship with intolerance is contrary to everything the City of St. Francis represents."
See above picture for an example. Now what God-loving person could have a problem with that?
