Bay Area Radio Institution Al Hart Bids Adieu; Final Chat With John Madden Tomorrow -- Early

The fellow at the right is Al Hart and, odds are, this is the first time you've ever seen him. But if you're a longtime Bay Area resident, you've probably heard him. For many of us, Hart's voice is synonomus with hair dryers, burned toast, and the other rites of the morning he essentially presided over as narrator during his 33-year stint as the anchor of KCBS radio's early show (I'm sure Hart is honored to know that, for many of us, his name and voice evoke memories of Dad with half a roll of bloody toilet paper bits stuck to his face).

Hart retired from his longtime gig in 2000 to nurse his wife, Sally, who was dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease. But, for the past several years, he's been back on the air for John Madden's morning show, kibbitizing with the coach from 8:15 to 8:25 a.m. But, for the 81-year-old, tomorrow will be his last show.

You can read a little more about Hart's career in a piece here by Contra Costa Times columnist Martin Snapp, who is something of the broadcaster's personal Boswell. It's a sweet piece befitting an elder statesman of radio -- but does Snapp really need to note that "Al was born in Minneapolis, where he learned the values of decency and tolerance common to that area." You know, 81 years ago they weren't exactly raping and pilaging in the streets here in the Bay Area.

In any event, Al's last show is tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 7 on KCBS 740 AM at 8:15. Let's see how many times Madden says "boom."
