No Dickensian Christmas in SF as Harlots, Peaceniks, Go to Washington

Traditional Christmas in San Francisco is a colorful Charles Dickens pageant of ragtag peaceniks and harlots on Market. Street, in the Tenderloin, and in the Mission. Most years, they recreate the mood of a Victorian-London slum by begging passersby for alms in exchange for political pamphlets or sexual favors.Not this year, however.
Dec. 2008 promises a most un-Dickensian Christmas season as the city's peaceniks and harlots travel to Washington D.C. for holiday protest demonstrations.
As we previously reported, San Francisco's famed Code Pink peacenik group was in Washington D.C. this week to protest the war in Iraq. Meanwhile, the city's harlots, as represented by San Francisco's Sex Workers Outreach Project, were in the nation's capitol Dec. 17 for a protest march demanding better treatment from law enforcement of strumpets who become crime victims, according to the group's website.
"Alone, we're just prostitutes" The Washington Post quoted a harlot identified only as Leila as saying during a march toward the U.S. Justice Department building. "Together we are a political movement."
That's fine, we suppose.
But San Franciscans wishing to experience a Dickensian Christmas will this year have to settle for a staged facsimile at the 30th Annual Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party Nov. 28 to Dec. 21 at the Cow Palace. -- Matt Smith
