SF's Truthiness Squad

Categories: Media

Colbert-truthiness.jpgA little while back Michael Stoll, formerly of Bay Area media watchdog Grade the News, launched a nonprofit online local news site, The Public Press. The best thing the Public Press has been doing this election season, along with Newsdesk.org, is the San Francisco Election Truthiness Report, which fact-checks the claims of local campaigns. This week, they've sorted through SF's campaign junkmail in search of half-truths and the usual election-time distortions.

The Truthiness Report isn't perfect. Some of the reports read like typical he said/she said daily news pieces instead of just telling us what's factual or inaccurate. (And I wish they were more critical of Prop H, the public-power campaign championed by the Guardian, but that sentiment reflects my own bias.) Still, it's nice to see someone try to fact-check local campaigns the same way the mainstream press does with the national races. Check it out. -- Will Harper
