Today in Bay Area History: It's Wave Day
Today marks the (highly contested) anniversary of the invention of The Wave by Krazy George Henderson (you can tell how crazy he is by the use of a 'k' in lieu of a 'c'.) Krazy George, who has a penchant for cut offs and tube socks, proclaims himself to be both the most famous and sexiest professional cheerleader. He also claims that at a nationally televised Oakland A's game on October 15th, 1981, he lead the world's first Wave.
The claim did not go uncontested.
The University of Washington argued that they had in fact invented The Wave during a homecoming game against Stanford the same year. Krazy George was having none of that.
In his "Wave Statement", posted on his Web site, Krazy George writes:
The Wave that I created has become a worldwide sport's phenomenon and certainly a piece of American pop culture. Those who might say that this is frivolous have never created anything that made the entire world stand up and cheer and then have someone else try to take the credit.
You can read the rest of his strongly worded, six point "statement of irrefutable fact" here.
