Photos: PETA Takes A Shower At Union Square

Cassandra Callaghan and Colleen Higgins are taking showers all over the state for PETA. Fresh from Fresno, the pair (aided by two other well-heeled PETA ladies) set up a stall on the corner of Geary and Powell at around 2 p.m., stripped out of their matching white robes and bathed beneath a large water bag.

"You can save more water by not eating one pound of meat than you can by not showering for six months," said campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne as another member of the team passed out "vegetarian starter kits" (which were a little scary to this carnivore). *As for those numbers, the folks at the Center for Consumer Freedom beg to disagree.

Sacramento's the next stop for the traveling stall. Click the image above for a start-to-finish slideshow detailing this afternoon's spectacle. The tourists were never so happy to have those point-and-shoots. But whether or not this was really necessary or whether San Francisco, where nudists run wild, was the place for the statement is beyond us. --Janine Kahn
