Olympic Torch Met With Alarm and Protest, Stroll Along Waterfront

The route you’ve all been waiting for is finally here. The Olympic Torch, as promised, will not make a stop in Chinatown, but will instead stick to the waterfront on its April 9 journey. Opening ceremonies will take place at McCovey Cove, then the torch will be whisked down the Embarcadero, past the Wharf, and loop back around to end at Justin Herman Plaza. In addition to announcing the official torch route, the board of supervisors passed a seven page resolution (pdf link) expressing their dismay with China. The resolution reads like a laundry list of the country’s human rights abuses and advises that "while the publicity of this stop can never cover up the human rights crisis in china, this stop will also provide the people of San Francisco a life time opportunity to help 1.3 billion Chinese people gain more freedoms." You don’t have to tell the citizens of San Francisco to protest twice. The resolution also calls for an "international inquiry" into the actions of the Chinese government, urges Newsom to "express his concern", and asks that the City’s representative who officially receives the Torch to do so with "alarm and protest." I’m not sure how one receives anything with alarm and protest while maintaining their dignity, but I assume it has something to do with raised eyebrows and an almost imperceptible downward turn of the corners of the mouth. Start practicing in the mirror now, City Representative.(pic from the Chronicle)-Andy Wright
