Early Morning Olympic Torch Update

torch%20relay.jpgThousands of people turned out for the rally at United Nation’s Plaza last night, featuring guest speakers Richard Gere and Desmond Tutu.

Chronicle columnists Matier & Ross are reporting that there will be not one, not two, but three layers of cops shielding torch runners from protesters. The Chinese government issued this awesomely dire warning via Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu : "We. . .warn groups and elements attempting to disrupt and sabotage the torch relay that their goal -- of using the Olympics for their unspeakable ends and to blacken and put pressure on China -- is absolutely unattainable."

Unspeakable ends? Wired has two posts up about the torch, one about protesters going digital with viral video and text messages and one about the amount of CO2 spewed forth into the environment by the jets that chauffeur the torch around the world.

And finally, things took a turn for the macabre when a man walked outside his Marina home wearing a "Free Tibet" sign around his neck and fatally shot himself in the head late Monday night. --Andy Wright
