Castro Theatre to Start Showing Blockbusters

Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 10:31:50 AM

castro_theater.jpgIt's finally happened. The Castro Theatre, one of the city's best repertory film showcases, and a gorgeous, historic building to boot, will start showing traditional first release fare this summer, according to the Bay Area Reporter.

The Castro usually shows an eclectic selection of old classics and "new classics" like, uh, Footloose. For instance, this weekend you can take in the Cabinet of Dr.Caligari as scored by the Bay Area’s Club Foot Orchestra performing live. But independent theaters everywhere are suffering and the Castro is no exception. In order to raise profits, the theater will offer summer patrons the new Indiana Jones movie and, shudder, the Sex and the City movie.

Ok, I was planning on going to the new Indiana Jones movie anyway, and so were you, probably. So why not see it at the Castro so that they can continue to offer us once-in-a-lifetime opportunities like watching the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on the big screen? You haven't really seen Dolly Parton's rack until you've seen it projected. --Andy Wright
