The Daily Show Goes To Berkeley, With Predictable Results

Wed Mar 12, 2008 at 10:32:11 AM

Correspondent (and former Marine) Rob Riggle of The Daily Show went to Berkeley to explore the Marine recruiting center controversy, disguised as a scarily accurate hippie throwback "to earn the trust of the locals." In classic, brilliant Daily Show style, Riggle basically points a camera at members of Code Pink and lets them bury themselves with their own absurd statements, leading to this satiric crescendo between Riggle and a Code Pinker:

Code Pinker: "Wars in general would stop if we didn't have weapons, just like violence in our streets would stop if we didn't have weapons."

Riggle: "So if we got rid of police we wouldn't have crime?"

Code Pinker: "Potentially."

Berkeley Marine Sanctuary says:

As a Berkeley resident who supports the USMC's presence in town -- I loved this piece. Riggle clearly had his hand on the pulse of this situation.

Why Code PINK didn't just throw down their tiaras and surrender to superior logic, I don't know. Unfortunately, they didn't. By this afternoon they have multiple trucks and cars parked on Shattuck in front of the OSO -- lots of hot pink slogans on signs, and not much else.

Thank you, Daily Show!

Former Marine says:

Rob Riggle is not a former Marine. He is currently a Major in the reserves. In case Code PINK wonders what that means, it is called courage.
