Academy of Sciences' Living Roof: More Than Just Seven Green Humps

Like many San Franciscans, I've had the opportunity to ponder the meaning of the seven Shire-esque green humps atop the roof of the new California Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park. While the building design was produced by Italian architect Renzo Piano, the green roof -- intended to be one of the greenest (read: efficient and sustainable) buildings in the Bay Area -- was much more of a collaborative effort between the architects and landscape firm SWA Group. The Architectural Record examines the construction and design issues of "the living roof" today in-depth. For even more check out the Academy's own informative page. (via Curbed SF)
