Shocker: S.F. Ranked Second Greenest City, Behind Portland

Categories: Environment

Culling data from the Census Bureau and the National Geographic Society Green Guide, Popular Science has ranked the top 50 greenest cities in the U.S., measuring all the usual suspects -- there are 30 in all -- including air quality, electricity use and transportation habits. The not-so-shocking results show San Francisco ranked number two, just behind our northern neighbor Portland, Oregon. Berkeley, meanwhile, clocked in at number seven. While Portland kicked our asses in the electricity, green living and recycling categories, there is one place where we triumphed: transportation, which is a surprise -- given the word-on-the-street opinion of Muni service (here's a hint: SUCKS).
