Board Of Supervisors: Glen Or Glenda? Ah, Who Gives A Shit

glenorglenda.jpg

Mark a victory for San Francisco cross-dressers and transsexuals. Yesterday the Board of Supervisors approved non-gender specific municipal ID cards. The cards themselves, to be issued without regard to legal status, are aimed primarily at helping illegal immigrants open bank accounts and qualify for various city services, and not surprisingly the issue has been contentious in cities across the country where the immigration debate gets top billing.

But of course this is San Francisco, and with an outspoken transgender community, it ain't all about immigration. Advocates say the genderless IDs will help prevent discrimination and smooth the transition for gender benders across the board:

"Martin Rawlings, 30, is a female-to-male transsexual. When he legally changed his name in 1999, he had trouble getting his employer to change it on his paycheck. His bank, though, had changed his name."

Awkward!
