Thrillist Offers Frat Boi Cheat Sheet to SF

Twenty-seven year old Patrick Heig is the editor of what claims to be the manliest online publication in this hippie-ass city, other than you know, 100 Percent Beef.

The brand new media property Thrillist purports to be your pal at the bar stool, you know, one who sends you e-mails with cool stuff to do.

“We try to think of it as one buddy telling another buddy about something cool,” Heig says.

Prime example: Thrillist told their audience about The Mermaids Cruise, a tiny cruise ship on which the main entertainment is strippers. (They have never served the Minnesota Vikings). As The Mermaids Cruise website says, strippers on a boat is “the other San Francisco treat.”

frat boys, bachelors, and married men looking for ways to avoid doing the dishes.

It fills a hole that wasn’t quite filled by similar e-mail lists, says Heig. “Before Thrillist—in San Francisco and in the nation at large—there simply wasn't a convenient source of immediate, relevant information for guys,” says Hei, who works from his home in the Lower Haight “more than full-time.”

The free Thrillist publication generate its revenue from advertising in the text and sidebars. But their editorial policy makes it clear that their recommendations of products and services are strictly the opinions of the editorial staff, and that they don’t accept money in exchange for positive reviews. In their FAQ section they further explain that, “We're frequently bribed with suitcases of crisp 20s and crates of smuggled monkeys but we always decline them.”

The idea began two years ago, covering New York's guy world. It’s expanded to Los Angeles, opened shop in San Francisco on September 12, and plans to open in Chicago in the coming months. They’ve got 125,000 national subscribers, and more than 5,000 in San Francisco.

So how did Heig get this big-pimpin’ job with Thrillist? He has a manly answer: “Apparently they think I’m really cool.”

But Heig probably has some latent talent too, seeing as though he grew up with a family in the publishing world. His mom is Adair Lara, a columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle. His stepfather is a senior editor at Chronicle Books, and his father is the publisher of Scotwall Associates.

Heig, who has no prior tech background and does not want his photo published, has found a way to do the geeky computer stuff while maintaining his coolness.

“I struggle with elementary computer programs on a daily basis,” Heig says. “Thrillist could be considered a tech media, but my job as an editor is filtering content, writing and editing pieces, and going out for lavish lunches with PR companies.”
