Chauncey Bailey's Killer Confesses

According to the Oakland Tribune, a 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery told police last night that he killed the editor of the Oakland Post because "he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery, its employees and leaders in the past." The suspect, Devaughndre Broussard, also reportedly said he was worried about a story Bailey was working on about the group's finances and its possible links to criminal activity. Read the story here.

The Chron's Henry Lee added another interesting detail about Broussard in a followup today: When Broussard was 15 years old, he participated in a mentorship program at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Broussard doesn't sound like a criminal mastermind. Police say they found the shotgun used to kill Bailey in his apartment. Uh, hmmm. Why didn't he throw the thing in the bay?

The next big question is whether Broussard was acting on orders from Bey family leaders or whether he made the decision to hunt down Bailey himself. Sure we'll be hearing more in the coming days and weeks.
