Bipolar Bay Guardian Loves, Hates the de Young
You may have heard that a certain weekly paper will hold its annual Best of the Bay party at the de Young Museum tonight. This year's theme: Show Us Your Compromised Principles!
Let us explain: The Bay Guardian has spilled a fair share of ink assailing the de Young in recent times. A few years ago, the paper railed against the museum for its plans to build a parking garage in Golden Gate Park. Last year, the BG repeatedly pilloried certain “recalcitrant patricians” at the de Young for fighting a proposal to close a portion of JFK Drive to cars on Saturdays.
So what happens this year? After all that hatin', anti-union publisher/editor/Johannes Brahms wax model Bruce Brugmann and his minions decide to hold their bash at the museum. Though we must agree, it's a beautiful setting to display the paper's transparent hypocrisy.
Allow us to offer a friendly reminder to Brucie & Co.: Principles only matter if backed up with corresponding action. Criticizing the de Young and then hosting a party there shows about as much consistency as an allegedly progressive newspaper refusing to pay its interns. – Martin Kuz
