Walter Simon -- the crack dealer in a wheelchair -- and his lover's leaden heart
The Chron recently reported that an alleged Tenderloin crack dealer in a wheelchair, Walter Simon, is getting brought up on weapons charges after being involved in a gunfight in April. None of the stories I’ve read about this case mention its most cinematic aspect: When someone rolled up on Simon and started shooting, his girlfriend jumped in front of him and took three bullets in her side, according to an April 14 search warrant affidavit (Page 1, 2, 3, 4). Now that’s love!
Simon’s fiancé, 23-year-old Latanya Mosely, wasn’t seriously hurt, according to SF police. But still -- would you take a bullet for your lover?
Mosely also didn’t snitch on the dude when the cops questioned her, telling police her beau didn’t have a gun at the time of the shooting, according to the federal criminal complaint(PDF). SFPD suspected that Simon may have fired the shot that killed 54-year-old Lena Allen.
Police arrested Simon on homicide charges back in April, but things went hinky from there. According to the June 1 Chron story, DA Kamala Harris declined to prosecute Simon, and instead tried to have the state department of corrections revoke his parole. For some reason that didn’t happen and then the feds came in.
From what I know, there’s a lower standard of proof required to revoke someone’s parole -- as opposed to obtaining a criminal conviction -- so it seems weird that Simon didn’t wind back up in the slammer for that. Looks like someone dropped the ball here. -- Will Harper
