A $50 million Cheshire grin -- Larry Mazzola, U.S. Department of Labor, Plumbing and Pipefitting

We can quit wondering whether plumbers union honcho and California political fixer Larry Mazzola is happy the U.S. Department of Labor let him off easy in settling allegations that he steered the diversion of $50 million in union worker benefit funds to his pet-project Konocti Harbor Resort.
This Teflon Union Boss is apparently ecstatic.

Wednesday SFWeekly reported that the DOL attorneys agreed to let Mazzola off without so much as a slap on the wrist after spending countless investigator hours over more than a decade proving the funds diversion, and litigating Chao v. Mazzola: Thursday, I learned that Mazzola had written a gloating letter to members of Local 38 of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, in which he preened about how the feds hadn't managed to lay a finger on him.

"As the old saying goes, 'All's well that ends well.' This matter has indeed ended very well," Mazzola bragged. -- Matt Smith
