With the second weekend in May approaching you may feel distraught about the terrible weather. Each day seems filled with frigid wind (eliminating picnic potential) and the nights aren't warm enough to do anything awesome -- except hit up some of the great shows coming this weekend. Here are the suggested activities to fill the freezing weekend:
Friday night skank the night away at Slim's with ska favorites the Slackers from New York City. The show starts at nine and tickets are $15. If you prefer "rock lobster" or "the love shack," head to the Independent for the legendary B-52s. Though if you don't have tickets, tough luck. The show is sold out. Other evening options include Friday night festivities at the de Young Museum. They promise "a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe is open with a special Friday Nights dinner menu, and a no-host cocktail bar is serving drinks. There are art-making activities for everyone."

Ah yes, Friday. I bet you thought it would never arrive. And May! For students the school year comes to a close and the rest of you can look back longingly at the free, fun and beautiful days of summer vacation. Sigh. At least you can live it up on the weekends.
On Friday Scotland's Sons and Daughters brings their bad ass rock to the Great American Music Hall. In addition to playing a great live show, all the members are fabulously stylish. They're accompanied by LA's Bodies of Water, a band that sounds eerily like the Arcade Fire. The show starts at 9 pm, doors are at 8 pm and tickets are $15 at the door. If you're feeling artsy head over to D Structure on Haight Street for Antique Road Show. The event celebrates the Correct Clothing Fall 08 release and Rarity Bazaar. Other things to look forward to? New art and DJs. Also! Make sure you go see Iron Man. Seriously, it's going to rule so hard everyone will cry tears of joy when they leave the video store. At least I hope that's the case.

Well here we are again, the bliss and beauty of the weekend. This weekend will be chock full of great music, awesome movies and lots of wild events. Get out into the sun (that showed up just in time for the weekend) and get your fun on!
For those of you diggin' film, check out some flicks from the the San Francisco International Film Festival which started yesterday. Tonight head to the Herbst Theatre to check out Olympia's indie rock badass Kimya Dawson. Tickets available through Ticketmaster. You may just know her as that chick from the Juno soundtrack, but she's way cooler than that. If you'd rather just dance like crazy, the Plasticines from France will be rockin' socks off. The show is $10, all ages and starts at 10. However, there is an even better way to spend your evening -- Good Vibrations in Berkeley is hosting a "Green Sex for Earth Day and Every Day" event. This is what they say, "Kick off Earth Day with a buzz! Ever wondered what makes a sex toy green? Join us for an exploration and explanation of our environmentally sustainable products. Find out how everything from vibrators to lube and massage oil is made of the best ingredients for you and the earth." All the action starts at 7! Once you're done with the Good Vibes, visit the Shattuck Down Low to see the Coup. These guys are one of the best acts in the hip hop world.

Oh yes it's that time again -- the weekend! Hopefully the weather will hold up (but not be as hot as last weekend) so you can head out and get your fun on.
Friday night head to the SOMA Artists Studios for their Spring Open House and SF Suicide Prevention and Silent Auction. The silent auction starts at 6pm and they'll bids start at $25 to benefit Suicide Prevention. They'll be food! The open house lasts all weekend. If comedy is more your thing head to Cobb's to hear Ty Barnett from "Last Comic Standing." For music lovers, Elf Power will play the Bottom of the Hill for $10 at 10pm with doors at 8:30pm. They're one of the most adorable bands Athens, Georgia has to offer!

This weekend promises beautiful weather (hopefully the wind will subside completely), so there's no excuse for sitting around and watching "The Wire" all day. There's lots of awesome stuff going on this weekend. Here are the highlights:
Friday night head to the Castro Theatre from 7 to 9:30pm for the 2nd Annual Epidemic Film Festival presented by Academy of Art University. The festival showcases films in the genres narrative, documentary, commercial, music video and experimental. Complimentary tickets will be available today. If live music is your thang, the Independent has a show for you. Brooklyn natives and total babes the Dirty Projectors will rock out big time along with Vancouver's No Kids and San Diego's Rafter. Doors are at 8:30 and the show starts at 9.
On Saturday anticipate weather upwards of 75 degrees (they predict 80, but weather people always lie), so what could be better than the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival? The festivities take place all weekend with a street fair all weekend featuring traditional Japanese cooking, art and performance. The queen program takes place Saturday and the Grand Parade starts at 1pm on Sunday at the Civic Center.

So you had a long, hard week. The boss worked you too hard, you had to write a thousand papers and your girlfriend nagged you about coming home too late. Who cares? Today is Friday. The weekend. Stop moping and do some cool shit.
Tonight the hippest galleries of Lower Haight host Cultured! - A Gallery Hop. Attendees visit Lower Haters, FIFTY24SF and D-Structure. Highlights will include meet and greets with artists, prizes and booty shakin' tunes. Other activities for the evening? DJs galore for Pop Sh!t at 111 Minna Gallery. Or if you really suck, My Chemical Romance at the Warfield. Last night kids lined up around 4:30 for 6:30 doors, you better go get in line right this minute.
On Saturday hit up O'Neills Irish Pub in Ghirardelli Square to get your drink on. They're hosting Around the World in 80 Beers: A Beer Lovers Extravaganza. They claim "This enjoyable event will be a Unique opportunity for you to discover New & Exotic beers while gauging stylistic differences against your own preferences." A cultural experience indeed (or a chance to get drunk in the name of culture). If beer isn't your think and a road trip is in order, trek San Jose to see the Boss bring "Thunder Road" to California. During the day, head down to the Asian Art Museum to see the most fly new kimonos from Tomita Nobuaki.
Wrap up the weekend with Berkeley natives the Counting Crows at the Apple Store. Yes, the 90's will play and talk about their new album. Pull out the flannels and hopefully we'll get some "Mr. Jones." - Melissa Baron
