Future-minded Gawker affiliate io9 has compiled a lil' infographic, all the more pregnant in its brevity, about how the world changed between 2000 and 2010. Our population grew by nearly a billion people in just ten years? Spine-tingly-dingling.

The Triple Crown To Hold Big NYE Bash -- Then Close for Good

Triple-Crown-closing.jpg
The Triple Crown
That's right folks, the Triple Crown -- that outpost of happy-hour treats, fake leather seats, DJ nights, and big chandeliers perched on the corner of Octavia and Market -- is closing.

But it's not departing without a bang -- or in this case, a boom-bap, an oonce-oonce, and a talking drum. See, Triple Crown's kicking the champagne bucket on New Years' Eve, so a pack of notable local DJs will be there to peel the black paint off the walls with fresh jams and make sure you remember the occasion. (Relatively speaking.) Only 300 people will get in, making this downright intimate compared to that other NYE party you were considering -- hell, you might even see someone you know!

They think you should make those NYE plans early
No one will fault you on New Year's Eve for being too glitzy, too loud, or too boozy. It's the one time of the year we're pretty much required to celebrate to excess -- there's even a mandatory beverage (champagne) and sexual activity (public smooching). There's a pretty healthy mix of events for you to perform these acts at when the clock strikes 2011. Here are some of the coolest, dirtiest, most glitter-covered NYE parties in San Francisco.

Black & White Ball @ Carnelian on the Bay
Dressed to the nines (semi-formal attire required), Black & White Ball attendees will be privy to three rooms and two levels of live entertainment, all with the backdrop of the Carnelian on the Bay's sparkling waterfront views (which may or may not be diminished by heavy fog). Club hits and Top 40 tunes will be spun by Chris Conley and Michael Ramirez in the Bay View Ballroom while '80s, '90s and international Latin hits will be pumping through the City Skyline section. ($65-$75, 7 p.m.)

Furthur New Year's Eve Spectacular @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
For those in search of a mellower New Year's Eve music event, Furthur's live show at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is for you. Furthur, featuring jam-friendly Grateful Dead legends Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, debuted in Oakland in 2009 and now returns for two live shows at the tail end of 2010. The very last show of the year has the band playing three sets. ($45, 7:30 p.m.)
