Should California Buy Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch? Yes, Please

The news that California Assemblyman Mike Davis wants the state to buy Michael Jackson's former estate and open it to the public has prompted many a raised eyebrow. How can California possibly afford to do this at a time when it's more strapped for cash than MJ was when he sold the place?

But is it actually a preposterous idea? No. It's a great idea. Add a petting zoo -- if only for the double entendre -- and I'm sold. But even if they kept it as is, what parents would rather see their child's eyes widen in wonder at the sight of Disneyland's Mickey Mouse for 70 bucks a pop, when they could get the same reaction by going to the infamous spot where police discovered syringes, IV stands, a metric shitload of drugs, and pictures of strange toddlers -- all during a raid prompted by child molestation charges?

A Look Back at Michael Jackson's Bay Area Appearances

Categories: Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson never graced the Bay Area with a solo show, though the Jackson 5 did perform its second official concert as a Motown act at San Francisco's Cow Palace on June 19, 1970, appearing as the opening act for Tina Turner and Rare Earth; they returned to the venue in 1972 and 1973.

J5 was back in the Bay Area the following year for a staggering seven shows at the Circle Star in San Carlos, dancing and singing around the unique rotating stage of this legendary (and now defunct) theater in the round, and a concert at the much-larger Oakland Coliseum at the end of the year.

"In San Francisco and Los Angeles, it looked like the walls were falling, the way hundreds of them--the girls--came at the stage all together," Jackson, then 12, told Soul Magazine after their first visit in 1970. "But we have to practice getting away too, so we're ready to drop everything and run."

In 1979, Jackson sat down with the still-alive Soulbeat TV of Oakland, the city where his father Joseph spent several of his formative years, to conduct the above interview, though it is unclear where it took place. While much of it is drowned in Herb Alpert's trumpet, it's still a treat to hear him talk about his favorite subjects in school and his mother's original career aspirations.

A List of Michael Jackson Commemoration Events in San Francisco Today

Some poor employee at mobile entertainment company Predicto Mobile was asked to come up with 10 text-friendly Michael Jackson songs to be complete asses/butcher classic lyrics honor the pop star's legacy on the one-year anniversary of his death today. See the unfortunate list in its entirety here, but here's a sample:

ABC EZ as 123 o simple as doe ray me abc baby u and me girl

Cuz this is thrilla thrilla nite there ain't no 2nd chance against the thing w/40 eyz, grl

Luckily there are better options for celebrating the King of Pop that don't include getting swiftly kicked out of your social circle. So brush up on the moonwalk and dust off that red leather jacket, because if you can't keep up with the itinerary of MJ events we've compiled for Friday, there's no one to blame but the boogie.

8 a.m. -  Wake up to CBS's Early Show morning tribute, with performances by an interesting mix of musicians, including Christina Aguilera, LL Cool J and Marc Anthony. Ah, well. Not everyone can be pop royalty.

Noon - See the Michael Jackson art and photos on display all day at the San Francisco Art Exchange gallery near Union Square on Geary Street. The striking picture above is part of the collection.

4 - 7:30 p.m. -  Watch or join one of the six Michael Jackson flash mobs happening around the city. See the full schedule here, as well as online dance tutorials. It doesn't beat these prisoners doing "Thriller," but then again, not much does.

9 p.m. -  Shake your body down to the ground to 14-piece Michael Jackson tribute band Foreverland's Moonwalker show at the Regency Ballroom. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster for $40 and will also be available at the door. Don't leave home without your sequined glove, because there will be a costume contest.

Hope 2 c u there, bb!
