Santana Reunites With Homeless Former Band Member After Seeing Him on TV

Santana and Malone, reunited
Over at KRON 4, observer of people behaving badly (and SF Weekly cover subject) Stanley Roberts just pulled off a real-life Christmas miracle. While shooting a report on illegal dumping in Oakland, Roberts interviewed a homeless man named Marcus Malone, who, Malone said, was an original member of Carlos Santana's blues band, but had gotten thrown in jail just before Woodstock, and just before the band caught its break.

Roberts went back, filed his report, and put Malone on TV -- where Santana, who was watching, saw him.

Turns out Malone wasn't kidding.

After seeing his old, now-homeless conga player on TV, Santana made numerous trips to East Oakland looking for him. After those attempts failed, his management got in touch with Roberts, who reunited the two musicians in front of the cameras -- much to Malone's surprise.

"You don't know how hard I prayed to get to see you," Malone told Santana.

Now that they're back in touch, the legendary Latin rocker is going to help get his former bandmate back on his feet. "I want to offer him a place to stay in an apartment, get him some clothes, and just get him out of the street," Santana said in a CNN interview about the reunion. He said he also wants to get Malone recording a new album soon.

Yo te amor, Carlos Santana! And I love the idea of a news channel that actually focuses on the acts of kindness, and people who are doing positive things to improve the quality of life for more than themselves. It would certainly take away some of the sting from the gloom and doom that's constantly being fed to us.

I like that, but I really don't like that news caster. In 2007 he did a people behaving badly segment about bike messengers smoking weed. Securitaly filmed messengers from a second story office building for weeks. A messenger friend threatened Kron 4 with lawsuit that night after it aired and it disappeared off the internet, which is a shame because it was hilarious!
