Paul McCartney Wants to Play the Last Concert at Candlestick Park

He's already waved goodbye to Candlestick once -- let's hope he does it again.
Paul McCartney just can't get enough of San Francisco. While the Beatles singer was in town last week to perform at Outside Lands, he fell into a conversation with S.F. Mayor Ed Lee, according to the Chron. After discussing Outside Lands, Lee turned conversation to the end of Candlestick Park, mentioning that the city was planning to honor the Beatles' final concert, which took place at Candlestick on Aug. 29, 1966. That's when, as the Chron tells it, McCartney floated the idea of playing the last-ever concert at Candlestick, sort of bringing things full circle.

"If you are going to tear down the stadium next year, we should think about us doing the last concert there,'" Sir Paul reportedly told Rec and Parks head Phil Ginsburg, according to Matier and Ross.

Of course there's no firm word on whether the show will actually come together, but it would make sense: McCartney is expected to release an ambitious (and as yet untitled) new album this fall, with contributions from Mark Ronson and Adele collaborator Paul Epworth, among others. He didn't premiere any new material in his incredible Outside Lands set last weekend, so a Candlestick date next spring would give him a good opportunity -- while netting a ton of attention. And Macca has played similarly sized venues on his own before -- his last S.F. show before Outside Lands was at AT&T Park in 2010.

It sounds pretty good to us. Mayor Ed and Sir Paul, make it so.
