Yes, 2 Chainz Was Really Robbed at Gunpoint in S.F. Yesterday
Despite a flurry of conflicting press reports -- spawned by conflicting statements from SFPD -- police have confirmed that Grammy-nominated rapper 2 Chainz himself was robbed at gunpoint in SOMA yesterday, only hours before taking the stage at KMEL's Summer Jam.
The rapper born Tauheed Epps was walking with five other members of his entourage in the 800 block of Howard Street (between 4th and 5th) at around 4:36 p.m., according to SFPD spokesman Dennis Toomer. Three men approached the entourage, and one of them fired a single shot, scattering the group. No one was hurt, but 2 Chainz lost a wallet filled with cash and credit cards as well as a cellphone, Toomer says. He described the shooter as a Hispanic male, 20-30 years old, with cropped hair, wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans. The suspect may have fled in a grey sedan, Toomer said.
Toomer says it wasn't clear whether the trio targeted the entourage knowing the rapper was part of it. The 800 block of Howard Street contains the Green Door marijuana dispensary, leading to speculation that the group was coming or going from there. But Toomer said police don't know if 2 Chainz went to the Green Door or not.
Earlier information said 2 Chainz wasn't the victim, leading to the contradictory reports. But Toomer says SFPD's official report indicates Epps' property was lost in the incident -- just a wallet and a phone, not (in case you were wondering) any chainz.
