The Top Five Songs You'll Need To Know at KMEL's Summer Jam
Summer Jam, the annual concert held by KMEL, returns to Oakland's Oracle Arena this Sunday, June 9. Each year, the show features multiple artists performing short sets of their current party-forward hits to an enthusiastic crowd that knows the words by heart. We realize that you may not have as much time to listen to the radio as we do, so we've whipped up a bluffer's guide to what are likely to be some of the loudest singalong moments this weekend:
Trinidad James appears at Summer Jam on June 9.
5. Trinidad James, "All Gold Everything"
Key line: "Popped a Molly, I'm sweatin', woo!"
The Atlanta upstart has released more than one song, but this is bubblegum -- largely due to that stupidly catchy E-touting shout. (Which James himself is sick of doing.) It's the only part of the song that matters: people have seriously made six-minute loops of it. We're not sure how the rest of his set is going to go, though he does have another song with a catchy hook: "My side chick is my main chick cuz my main ho ain't feelin' me no mo." You're welcome.
4. Jonn Hart featuring IamSu!, "Who Booty"
Key line: "Who booty is it, who booty is it, who booty, who booty, who booty is it?"
You shouldn't have any trouble remembering the hook to this song. The hard part will be getting this R&B earworm out of your head later.
3. J. Cole, "Power Trip"
Key line: "Now typically I kick game like East Bay, but you got a nigga freeze framed, yelling, 'Please play!'"
"Power Trip" isn't the first time J. Cole has given a lyrical nod to Oakland, and hopefully everyone will give him a lot of love on this line. The recording of the song features singer Miguel on the hook. He lives in Los Angeles, so it may not be far-fetched to speculate on a possible secret appearance.
2. 2 Chainz, "I'm Different"
Key line: "Hair long, money long, me and broke niggas, we don't get along!"
Judging from his show at the Warfield last December, people here really love the Bay Area-esque beat and money flexing on this song. 2 Chainz lyrics are probably the easiest in this bunch to bluff; when in doubt, just keep saying, "I'm different, yeah, I'm different." And if it's off-beat, people will just think you're being different. It's a win-win situation.
1. Kendrick Lamar, "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe"
Key line: "I got my drink, I got my music, I will share it, but today I'm yelling, 'Bitch don't kill my vibe' [repeat 3x]"
This may be one of the last songs of the night, and lights up in the venue is definitely a vibe-killer after a fun night out, so soak this one up and really enjoy it. The album's first single "Swimming Pools (Drank)" will also be a big hit -- if you haven't heard it, the song will sound like a pro-drinking anthem, but it's actually a clever commentary against binging. Everyone will be yelling, "Drank! Drank! Drank!" So that will be confusing.
