Goldenvoice Announces First City Festival in Monterey With Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, MGMT, Beach House, More
Every year seems to bring more entrants to the Northern California music festival scene. The latest is First City, a two-day festival this Aug. 24-25 at the Monterey fairgrounds that will bring out big, indie-leaning names like Modest Mouse, Passion Pit, MGMT, Beach House, Toro y Moi, and Neko Case for its inaugural year.

Presented by Goldenvoice -- the same outfit that puts on Coachella -- First City is meant to echo Monterey's claim of being the "first capital" of California: The coastal city was home to the state's first public library, public school, theatre, and newspaper. It also hosted the legendary 1967 Monterey Pop festival on the same grounds First City will return to this summer.
The lineup of 30-plus bands pretty obviously targets the Wayfarer-and-skinny-jean crowd, and will be spread across two days and three live music stages. Here it is alphabetically:
Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks
The Black Angels
Eli "Paperboy" Reed
Father John Misty
Guy Blakeslee (Entrance)
The Hold Steady
Toro y Moi
Two-day passes for the festival go onsale 10 a.m. Friday, May 31, and begin at $149.50. More info on the First City Festival website.
