Outside Lands 2013: Five Bands To Expect on the Lineup
Update, 4/10/13: Outside Lands has started dropping clues about the lineup on Instagram, and so far it looks like Grizzly Bear and Chromatics are also playing this year.
It's official: The Outside Lands lineup will be announced a week from today, on April 16, 2013. And while some hints about this year's bill have spilled out on the Internet so far, it seems high time to round up what we know so far. Here, then are six artists we're pretty sure are on the 2013 Outside Lands lineup -- plus a few solid guesses. This year's festival runs Aug. 9-11 in Golden Gate Park.
1. Paul McCartney
We told you a couple of weeks ago about the Last.fm page that showed McCartney playing Sunday at this year's festival. We don't have any more info than that, but as Macca's camp keeps trickling out more U.S. tour dates for the summer, none of them conflict with Outside Lands -- and none announced so far are in the Bay Area. This seems very likely.
The band just played a sold-out show at the Independent, and doesn't have any other dates set for the Bay Area. Given that the French rockers are worthy of headlining a night at Coachella, they could easily do the same at Outside Lands. The same Last.fm page that dropped the hint about McCartney now shows Phoenix as playing the fest, too.
Festival mascot Ranger Dave mentioned doing the "Harlem Shake" on Twitter, and Baauer would be a popular fill for the festival's electronic dance music slots. His show next week at Another Planet's 500-capacity Independent is totally sold out, and a festival appearance would be in keeping with past year's pattern of artists playing smaller Bay Area shows in the spring, then returning for a blowout at Outside Lands in August.
4. The National
The beloved Brooklyn mopers have a new album, Trouble Wil Find Me, out May 21, and no Bay Area tour dates announced so far. They're playing Bonnaroo -- which is put on by Outside Lands co-promoter Superfly Presents -- and they have an L.A. date on Saturday, Aug. 10. Even if Last.fm didn't have them on the Outside Lands lineup (which it does), we'd expect a Golden Gate Park show either Friday or Sunday.
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Again: Coachella headliner, no Bay Area dates, and Last.fm has them playing S.F.'s marquis for-pay festival. We're not terribly thrilled about an RCHP appearance, either -- especially since they're likely a headliner -- but it looks like it's happening.
The Postal Service: This seems unlikely, given that the temporarily reunited electro-poppers are playing two shows at Berkeley's Greek Theatre on July 26-27, only weeks before Outside Lands. Granted, the duo doesn't have any conflicting tour dates, and it's booked for festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza. Still, don't count on an Outside Lands set.
Green Day: This would be an easy headliner, and a Bay Area superpower that could stand to reunite with its local fan base the way Metallica did last year. The band is playing the Greek Theatre in April, but that's a while before Outside Lands. Green Day, though, will be in Europe for most of the summer. Could the Berkeley boys hop back to the Bay Area between the dates in Bilbao, Spain on July 13, and the U.K.'s Reading Festival on Aug. 23? You bet. Will they? We'll have to wait a week to know.
Vampire Weekend: Another big name with a new album and a sold-out, Another Planet-presented Bay Area date this spring (April 17 at the Fox). The band is playing Lollapalooza the weekend before Outside Lands, and the Squamish Music Festival in Vancouver on Aug. 9. Seems likely they'd fly down to San Francisco for a big festival show around then, too.
The XX: It's been rumoured, and the band will be traveling from Asia to Europe around the time of Outside Lands. Might they stop in San Francisco for a show? It's definitely possible.
