Mount Tam Jam Books Galactic, Cake, and Others to Benefit Marin State Parks
There hasn't been a rock concert on top of Mount Tamalpais in decades. But there will be this year, when the first-ever Mount Tam Jam brings Galactic, Cake, Taj Mahal, and others to play a benefit show for the Marin County peak on its very own slopes. The concert comes at at difficult time for the California State Park system as a whole, and especially for Mt. Tam, as organizers point out:
Crag H via Every Trail The view from the Mountain Theater on Mt. Tam: Not bad.
The ample government funding that has in large part sustained Mt. Tam and hundreds of other State Parks for nearly a century is a thing of the past. It has become increasingly clear that direct support from creative partnerships such as ours is key to preserving the legacy of our parks, a reality just recently acknowledged by Anthony Jackson, the new Director of California State Parks.
Profits from Mount Tam Jam will go towards funding a broad range of sorely needed resources, from ranger and maintenance services to equipment for trail and bridge restoration and more expedient emergency response. In so doing, those resources will create ancillary benefit to other Marin County State Parks.
The concert's inaugural lineup includes Galactic, Cake, Taj Mahal Trio, Dany Click & the Hell Yeahs!, and others to be announced. It takes place Saturday, June 22, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Mountain Theater in Mount Tamalpais State Park. Tickets are $25 for kids, and $50-$100 for adults, depending on your seating preferences. They are onsale now. Parking on the mountain is an additional $20, but shuttles will be available from various Mill Valley locations for $4. There's also an option to hike down the mountain after the show and have a shuttle van carry your gear, which sounds like a lovely way to spend a post-concert evening. And if you really can't get enough music, Galactic is playing an after-party at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. It's $30 with purchase of a Tam Jam ticket.
