Phoenix Sells Out the Independent "Instantly," Tickets on Craigslist for $2,000 Each

The crowd Phoenix drew at Outside Lands in 2010 -- much larger than will fit inside the Independent.
Today, at about 11 a.m., the folks at the the Independent announced that French electro-rockers Phoenix will be playing the venue this Monday, April 1 -- and that the $45 tickets were going on sale at noon. Three years ago, Phoenix packed the Polo Fields at Golden Gate Park for a mid-afternoon set on the main stage of Outside Lands. So how fast did the band burn through the Independent's 500-person capacity?

"Instantly," says a spokesperson for Another Planet Entertainment, which manages the Independent. But how instantly? Live 105 Music Director Aaron Axelsen put the figure at 10 measly seconds. Which is rather more quickly than Dave Chappelle managed to sell out either the Independent or the Chapel for any of his four shows this week. (Chappelle, of course, also comes to the Bay Area way more often than Phoenix.)

At any rate, those of you hoping to get inside the Indy on Monday night better start trolling the shark-filled waters of Craigslist, where one lucky ticket buyer asshole is offering a pair for a cool $4,000 . Yes, $2,000 to see Phoenix -- just the thing for those who'd rather see some rock band play a smallish club than, say, take a two-week trip to Thailand (or pay rent on your Mission District one-bedroom for two months).

More reasonable fans scalpers are selling tickets to the show for between $200 and $350 each. It's still a stupid amount of money -- especially considering it would basically buy you passes to the summer music festival of your choice. But it's at least, er, a slightly less stupid amount of money?

[Shouts out to David Johnson-Igra for tipping us off to the Craiglist situation]

It wasn't even 10 seconds; I was refreshing the page continuously in the seconds leading up to noon, and when the form appeared, I selected 2 tickets, and was told there weren't anymore. 2-3 seconds, tops.

I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl a couple years ago and they were extremely disappointing. Very short set for the amount of material they have and also little to no improvisation; I could have listened to their CD and would have barely noticed a difference. I would not pay $10 to see them again.
