Five Disturbing Tales of Plots to Kill Musicians

Madonna and stalker Robert Dewey Hoskins
Sometimes, being a rich and famous musician is downright terrifying. It's impossible to know what motivates twisted humans to want to murder celebrities, but it's something that has only narrowly been avoided on several recent occasions. Here are five musicians who were targeted by psychos, but made it out alive (thank God, good neighbors, overzealous journalists, and security guards.)

Joss Stone

In the U.K. this week, two men are in court, facing charges that they plotted to break into the home of Joss Stone, murder and decapitate her, and then dump her body in a river. The two men traveled from the North of England to Joss's rural home in the South, in June 2011, carrying a Samurai sword, knives, a hammer, gloves, and trash bags. They never made it to her, thanks to suspicious neighbors who called the police when they suspected the two men were up to no good. Absolutely shitting terrifying.

Justin Bieber

Just last month, audio tapes of a phone conversation emerged between a prison inmate and a guy on the outside, in which the two talked about their plan to murder and castrate both Justin Bieber and his bodyguard. There are so many levels of stupidity here, it's hard to know where to begin. Firstly, no one's getting past that man mountain of a bodyguard. Secondly, dudes are having this conversation on a prison phone -- and in prison, your phone conversations are routinely recorded. (Duh.) Oh, and finally: what's the hitman's price for brutally murdering two people? $5,000 each. Is life really that goddamn cheap? Incidentally, the prisoner in this case who wanted Bieber dead is behind bars for raping and murdering a 15-year-old girl. Clearly, he has an inferiority complex to the point of psychosis.

Posh Spice

In the Winter of 2008, five men were charged with plotting to kidnap Victoria Beckham (and possibly her sons). The goal wasn't to murder the ex-Spice Girls singer, current fashion designer, and wife of soccer star David, but rather to ask for a ransom of $8 million. Interestingly, it was Rupert Murdoch's News of the World newspaper that discovered the plot and reported it to police. The paper has since been closed down due to the fact that it kept hacking into the phones of celebrities and crime victims. This might have been the one time something good came out of those overzealous investigation methods.

Miley Cyrus

Christ, teenagers can be dramatic. In early 2008, a 16-year-old boy decided that rather than just attempt suicide in a normal way, he was going to hijack a commercial airliner and crash it into a Miley Cyrus Hannah Montana concert in Louisiana. At least, that's what some news outlets reported at the time. The kid was charged with felony terrorism, though no people were ultimately harmed by his plot. Hormones are a terrible thing.

Okay, so no specific murder plot revealed here, but in 1996, a court decided that Robert Dewey Hoskins' stalking of Madonna was so extreme -- including death threats and breaking into her home -- that it warranted locking him up for 10 years and six months. Eerily, a storage locker of Hoskins' was sold in 2012 and found to contain creepy masks, knives, and a ton of Madonna memorabilia. Deeply unsettling.
