NOFX at 30: The Band's 10 Most Controversial Moments
5. Heavy Petting Zoo
Maybe this one has a special place in our hearts because we remember being totally confused/intrigued by it in sixth grade, but whatever. The cassette and CD version of this 1996 album features a painting of a guy molesting a sheep; the LP version is called Eating Lamb and has the guy performing 69 on the aforementioned farm animal instead. Fat Mike: "I thought it was the coolest record when we finished it, but a few months later I wasn't so sure. Some of those songs are kinda weird. I like the cover a lot though. I think it sold well in Belgium."
4. The P.M.R.C. Can Suck on This
The PMRC, younguns, was the Tipper Gore-headed committee seeking to clean up shocking, sex- and violence-filled music such as Prince's "Darling Nikki," Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It," and Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop." No, really. The original cover art for this 1987 EP featured cover art depicting Tammy Faye Bakker in stirrups, pegging televangelist Jim Bakker with a black strap-on.
3. Fat Mike does porn
Okay, not really. But alongside the Mad Caddies' keyboardist Dustin Lanker, he did provide the ragtime-y score for a fetish film called Rubber Bordello, written by and starring his (dominatrix) girlfriend, Soma Snakeoil, in early 2012. Fat Mike (who minored in human sexuality at SFSU) also has a cameo, though, and in general has begun talking more frankly about his interest in BDSM in recent years.
2. Singing about President Bush liking "dick" on Conan (AKA the crowning glory moment of the "Rock Against Bush" era)
In one of the most gleeful acts of network-televised political dissent we've ever seen -- honestly, until Kanye gave his famous post-Katrina dissertation a few years later, it reigned supreme -- the band changed the lyrics in the bridge of "Franco Un-American" when they performed on Conan O'Brien's show in 2004. Who else, in the weeks leading up to the presidential election, would get on late-night TV and sing "We all know George Bush is an imbecile/ He loves Dick but he hates homosexuals/ We're so sick of the embarrassment/ The whole world wants us to get a better president"?
1. Fat Mike pouring "urine" shots for traumatized SXSW crowd at Emo's
Aging as most of us can only hope to, the band's 2010 SXSW set saw Fat Mike in rare form as Cokie the Clown, upsetting just about everybody with stories about his mother dying and sort-of bearing witness to a gang rape as a young man, among other things, in between songs. Then, after debuting a song called "Drinking Pee," he appeared to relieve himself into a Patron bottle, then pour and distribute shots of his own urine for dozens of fans. He later revealed it to be a bit of video magic, but the Austin health department wasn't so amused, and he's allegedly still banned from the historic club. Fat Mike, you rascal, you. Here's to 30 more years.
