Local Song of the Day: The Easygoing Disco of Glenn Jackson's "Morning Swim"
As we noted today for SFist, one of the Bay Area groups we're most excited to watch in 2013 is the Oakland duo James & Evander, who make synth-pop that's both affecting and danceable. Glenn Jackson is the Evander in James & Evander, and his solo work -- to be showcased in a forthcoming EP on Brooklyn label Ceremony -- includes the kind of understated grooves and strong melodies we love in his other music. "Morning Swim" is the title track from Jackson's forthcoming EP, a buoyant instrumental disco that feels like a five-minute tropical vacation.

You may recognize that wistful, drenched melody from what was originally a piano line in the first few minutes of LCD Soundsystem's 45:33* -- or not! -- but that's far from the only attraction here. The track kicks off with an effervescent disco beat that builds slowly over its five minutes. Synths of various buzzy and glassy persuasions come to cascade over the easygoing rhythm and core refrain, and the track climaxes about halfway through with a slow, landscape tracking-shot kind of melody. By the end you'll find the images in your head helplessly -- and perfectly -- suggested by the song's title: This one's all sunshine, warm water, and a peaceful good time.
*Update: Jackson tells us via Twitter that "Believe it or not, i actually had never heard that lcd soundsystem song until someone pointed out the similarities to me!" Go figure.
