Why Did Christopher Owens Leave Girls? Too Many People

Many of us were quite surprised earlier this year when Christopher Owens, frontman of the acclaimed S.F. band Girls, suddenly announced his departure. After laying low for a while (and doing some modeling!), Owens is back with a new solo album, Lysandre, due in January, which he recently previewed at an intimate show in S.F.

But many Girls fans are still wondering what led Owens to break up his band with producer/bassist J.R. White in the first place. And in a new interview with NME, Owens answers that question. In short, Owens says, he just got tired of working with so many different people.

"When we very first started [Girls], we were both very clear that we had a very specific goal for the band and that if it didn't work out we would end it," Owens says. "We jumped in very quickly in the beginning because people liked what we recorded together and put on the Internet, so we just put together a live band. We always believed that at some point that we would find the right people and they would stay forever but unfortunately we didn't."
He adds: "Over four years we had about 21 people play with us. When Girls last played the UK our lead guitar player quit and drummer quit and I said, 'You know, I don't want to do this any more.'"

So that, as they say, was that. Owens goes on to state that Girls co-founder J.R. White was gracious about the decision, and that they're still friends. Meanwhile, Owens' solo debut, Lysandre, is out Jan. 15.
