Rrazz Room Owners Suing Hotel Nikko, Alleging Racism
The owners of the Rrazz Room -- a posh, cabaret-style club in Union Square that hosts live jazz and R&B, among other events -- are suing their landlord, the Hotel Nikko, saying the hotel's managers told them the club's shows were drawing too many African-Americans.
As a result of the conflict, the Rrazz Room will be closing after its New Year's Eve concert. Its owners plan to open a new club, Live at the Rrazz, in the AMC Theater building at 1000 Van Ness in January, according to the Chron.
The lawsuit claims that the hotel's vice president and manager asked the club to "change its musical programming to reduce the number of rhythm-and-blues acts because defendants did not want the Rrazz Room to attract to the Hotel Nikko a certain 'demographic' that rhythm-and-blues acts were drawing,"
The club owners "understood [the manager] to mean that defendants did not want to attract audiences that were disproportionately African American. Rrazz Entertainment refused to comply with [the manager's] request," the suit says.
Nikko representatives deny any racism, saying through a spokesman that the hotel ended its contract with the club because the hotel wanted to renegotiate financial details in the contract, but that the club's owners wouldn't budge.
Anyway, Jefferson Starship is reportedly set to play the opening night of new club Live at the Rrazz.
