The Top Five Parties in San Francisco This Weekend
2. As You Like It w/ ASC @ Beatbox
Friday, Nov. 9, 10 p.m. - 4 a.m.
As You Like it returns with another carefully thought-out evening at BeatBox. This time the headliner is ASC, a British DJ and producer with roots in drum 'n' bass. Today, however, he's pushing the genre forward by moving in the direction of acts like Instra:mental and dBridge to strip it down into a minimalistic kind of 170 BPM techno that's being referred to as the "Autonomic sound." That might be a little out of date, but his latest album Out of Sync follows heavily in that mold, with beautifully atmospheric tracks like "Oneironaut" and "Blurred Pictures" moving along at a deceptively fast speed. Get a feel for his DJing by listening to this recent set of his recorded in New York. Local support from favorites Ghosts on Tape, Bells & Whistles, and Mossmoss make this one a sure bet.
1. All Night Long with DJ Garth @ Public Works
Saturday, Nov. 10, 10 p.m. - 3:30 a.m.
San Francisco would be a very different place today if it wasn't for Garth. One of the four people behind Wicked Sound System, he was a key player during San Francisco's tenure as a rave destination. Those days may be over, but the spirit lives on in his unique style, which fuses together a bunch of disparate sounds into a totally cohesive whole. The last time we saw him, when he played with fellow Wicked member Jeno, he went from raggae-tinged breaks to spacey Italo disco in a way that emphasized the overall flow of the evening. This time he's taking over the Loft at Public Works for a full five-and-a-half hour journey -- which pretty much means this is a sure bet. Listen to his "No Rest for the Wicked" mixtape for 46 minutes of disco glory.
