The Freshest's DJ Marvel Used to Party-Rock the Cruise Ships
Your recent Zedd mix of "Spectrum" is really quite innovative and is an interesting take on a big-room track. What gave you the idea to do a soulful sexy version?
Thank you! Truthfully I wasn't up on the song when I came across the a cappella, but I really liked the vocal. When I finally heard the original version of "Spectrum," I was surprised that it was a big-room house song, so I decided to take it in another direction. I started messing with the Isley Brothers and Bone Thugs samples, and they seemed to fit naturally. And after that added some keys on top and voila!
Tell us a little about the upcoming Live Sets tour. What do you and Kutcorners hope to show with these performances?
Kutcorners and I started the concept of our Live Sets earlier this year. We made a few videos that got an amazing response. The videos led to our debut performance alongside Fool's Gold artist Telephoned at Vancouver's Fortune Sound Club. Since that we have been working on a bunch of new material to showcase when we hit the road this winter for our "two lonies tour."
What's your favorite piece of technology to utilize in your DJ sets ?
Maschine Mikro as a MIDI controller with Serato. It allows me to be at my laptop less, which I feel is a good thing. The pads feel great for chopping up cue points, and I like being able to easily trigger effects to enhance some mixes.
What's one of your favorite '90s jams that you'll be dropping this Friday?
"Make Room" by Tha Alkaholiks.
